The 96th annual Oscars come on the heels of the global box office successes of "Barbie" and Nolan's World War II biopic, each garnering hundreds of millions in revenue and creating a buzz worldwide.

However, this year's nominations weren't without their surprises. Greta Gerwig missed out on a Best Director nomination for "Barbie," although she and Noah Baumbach did receive a nod for the movie's adapted screenplay. Surprisingly, Margot Robbie, a key figure in "Barbie," was overlooked for an acting nomination.

In a historic moment, Lily Gladstone of "Killers of the Flower Moon" became the first Native American to be nominated for Best Actress. America Ferrera earned a Best Supporting Actress nomination for "Barbie," and Justine Triet entered the records as the eighth woman nominated for Best Director with "Anatomy of a Fall."

Earlier, at the BAFTA Film Awards, "Oppenheimer" led with 13 nominations, mirroring its Oscar success. "Poor Things," with Emma Stone in the lead and directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, also made a strong showing at the BAFTAs.

The Golden Globes saw "Oppenheimer" win five awards, including Best Drama Motion Picture, and "Poor Things" clinched the Best Musical or Comedy Motion Picture. The Globes also celebrated first-time nominees like Lily Gladstone and Da'Vine Joy Randolph, recognizing fresh talent in the industry.

"Barbie," though missing out on some of the major Oscar categories, still had a strong showing at the Globes, with nine nominations and two wins, including Best Original Song.
